For generations, people of all backgrounds have found resonance in Esther’s courageous act of self-discovery. Her story, celebrated during Purim, resonates as a powerful narrative of revealing one’s true self, finding acceptance, and ultimately using one’s voice to protect a community.

Beyond Esther’s journey, Purim traditions offer universal lessons. Sharing gifts and food reinforces the importance of solidarity and mutual support, reminding us of our responsibility to one another. The joyous tradition of costumes, the rambunctious and exuberant nature, and playful gender-bending during Purim reflects a longstanding celebration of diversity, resilience, and the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity.

As we don masks and costumes, revealing facets of ourselves hidden throughout the year, we dance between the seen and unseen. Like Esther, Mordecai, and other Purim characters, we are encouraged to integrate all aspects of our identity – the private and the inhibited, the public and expressive – into a unified whole.

Like many of our Jewish customs and traditions, drag arose from a historically marginalized community’s history of resistance and celebration. Whether you’re familiar with drag performances or curious about them, please know that our Purim celebrations are committed to fostering joy, delight, affirmation, inclusion, and a vibrant Jewish identity.

We invite you to join our Carnival, featuring the Barbie Megillah Shpiel (with numerous references to the hit movie), and our Purim After Dark party (adults only) with Drag Queen Bingo, Megillah readings, delicious food, and lively music!
