Curriculum & Jewish Learning

Q: What is the focus of the curriculum?

A: We offer a dynamic curriculum rooted in Jewish values, traditions, holidays, Hebrew language, Torah study, and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). Through jLAB’s creative, hands-on approach, learners explore these themes integrated with classes such as theater, cooking, digital media, and more.

Q: When do students begin learning Hebrew?

A: Hebrew learning begins in Kindergarten! We are proud to be an #OnwardHebrew program, following a developmentally appropriate, sound-to-print model that includes:

      • Hebrew Through Movement
      • Enriching Hebrew usage in tefillah/worship
      • Jewish Life Vocabulary integration
      • Introducing Hebrew decoding in later elementary years, after learners have developed a rich foundation in Hebrew sounds and structure

Q: How is B’nai Mitzvah preparation integrated into jLAB?

A: Hebrew skills are further developed through leveled Hebrew classes in our 6th and 7th Grade Gesher program, and learners rotate through a trimester-long Prayer Class with Cantor Porat aligned with their B’nai Mitzvah timeline. It is expected that learners have at least basic decoding skills before they begin individualized B’nai Mitzvah tutoring. Each learner also works with a mentor on their D’var Torah (speech) and work with the cantor on service leadership, ensuring a meaningful and individualized journey.

Family & Community

Q: Are parents involved in the program?

A: Yes! We offer a variety of opportunities for family engagement, including holiday celebrations, parent learning sessions, grade-level Shabbat programs, and opportunities to volunteer throughout the year.

Q: Do learners participate in services?

A: Absolutely. Learners take part in regular tefillah (prayer) experiences during jLAB and help lead their respective grade-level Shabbat services. Family participation in congregational Shabbat and holiday services is strongly encouraged. These moments help build confidence and a sense of belonging in Jewish communal worship.

Enrollment & Logistics

Q: How do I enroll my child?

A: Registration opens in early June. Families can complete the online form via our “Register” page. Enrollment is only open to members of Temple Beth Sholom in good standing. Please contact Craig Berko for assistance with membership.

Q: Is financial assistance available?

A: Yes. We are committed to making Jewish education accessible to all families. Financial aid is available through a confidential process handled by our education office.

Q: What safety and security measures are in place?

A: Our campus follows strict safety protocols, including secure entry, staff background checks, and coordination with onsite security personnel to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all learners.
