It is traditional during the month of Elul, which precedes the High Holy Days, to diligently prepare one’s heart and soul through acts of repentance, prayer, study, and right and just living. Join your Temple Beth Sholom Rabbis and Cantor for a careful study of Teshuvah, Repentance.
Quentin Tarantino writes that the film, Pulp Fiction is “the most classic of American stories, recalling the promise of the country from its earliest days: a place where it remains possible for sinners and misfits to wipe the slate clean, change their perspective and their ways and find a way toward a better, happier, even holier state.” Rabbi Glickstein will explore the Jewish concept of Teshuva in the larger context of Jewish history, Hebrew texts, and the month of Elul, as well as, through the creative mind of Mr. Tarantino.

Rabbi Loiben will lead a study based on Rabbi Abraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook’s book Orot Ha’Tshuva (The Lights of Improvement). This wisdom is seen as a means to rediscover our true selves, our essence, and our soul. By harnessing this inner light, we can dissipate any darkness that obstructs our path guiding us into the high holy day season. | Saturday, August 26, 12:30 pm (following lunch)

Much of our repentance revolves around our actions, towards others and God. But how do we account for the innermost thoughts that no one else can hear? Do those also require repentance? Join Rabbi Jacobs to explore how Judaism understands Teshuvah of the heart and mind. | Monday, August 28, 2023, 5:00 pm

“The Rhapsody” is a documentary that unfolds like a thriller. Composer and Holocaust survivor Leo Spellman’s secret wartime diary and long-lost orchestral masterpiece are the framework that bring his remarkable tale of survival to life. His eighteen months in hiding, fueled by fear, heroic resistance and raw guts, are portrayed through bold artwork and animation narrated by Stephen Fry.
The documentary features concert performances in Canada and Poland, rare archival footage, and an uplifting finale that recognizes Spellman’s legacy in the Polish town where he narrowly escaped death.
Our Selichot observance, led by our Clergy and Congregants, infuses the power of Teshuvah
(Repentance) with the heartfelt serenity of Tikvah (Hope). Our service begins with Havdalah ceremony; continues with heartfelt prayers, soulful music, time for introspection; and concludes with the stirring blast of the Shofar.
